Overnight strikes killed five people in Russia's Belgorod region and two in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on August 9, according to local authorities. The attacks injured 24 people in Belgorod, including a four-year-old boy, and 13 people in Kharkiv.
The reported deaths brought the toll from the overnight exchange to seven. The figures were issued during an active conflict and had not been independently confirmed by APPI News.
Apartment block hit in Kharkiv
Russian missiles struck a high-rise apartment block in Kharkiv's Saltivskyi district, Ukrainian regional head Oleh Syniehubov said. Two people were killed and 13 were injured in the city, which lies close to the Russian border.
Eight more people were injured after missiles and drones struck Odesa and the surrounding region, according to regional administration head Oleh Kiper. Photographs distributed by Ukraine's emergency service showed crews extinguishing fires at residential buildings.
Belgorod reports five deaths
Belgorod lies in western Russia along the border with Ukraine and has repeatedly come under Ukrainian attack during the war. The regional administration said the August 9 strikes damaged 29 apartment blocks, five private houses, administrative buildings and commercial properties.
The Associated Press attributed the toll of five dead and 24 injured to the Belgorod regional administration. Ukraine did not publicly confirm responsibility for the strikes in the reporting reviewed by APPI News.
Drone debris damages buildings in Novorossiysk
Russian officials also reported damage in Novorossiysk, a Black Sea port in Russia's Krasnodar region. Mayor Andrey Kravchenko said debris fell on two businesses and a private home, while regional authorities later reported that one person was injured, two houses were damaged and an apartment window was blown out.
Novorossiysk contains a fuel terminal linking oil fields in Kazakhstan with international markets. The terminal has previously been targeted in Ukrainian strikes, but officials did not say that the August 9 debris damaged it.
Russian military claims remain unverified
Russia's defense ministry said its forces struck drone warehouses in the Kharkiv region and fuel depots and other Ukrainian military stores at the port of Odesa. It also said Russian forces shot down 153 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over Russian-occupied Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.
Those military claims could not be independently verified. The confirmed scope of damage, the origin of every weapon and the final casualty count may change as authorities release further information.
