Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk, an oil hub in Russia's Tatarstan region, on August 10, killing 13 people and injuring at least 75, according to regional authorities. Ukraine said its forces hit the Taneco refinery, while Russian officials said a drone struck a worker hostel where nine people died.
Nizhnekamsk is about 1,200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border and has roughly 240,000 residents. The city contains two refineries and a petrochemical plant, making the attack part of Ukraine's expanding campaign against energy infrastructure deep inside Russia.
Worker hostel accounts for nine deaths
Russian officials said a drone hit a worker hostel, killing nine of the 13 victims, including citizens of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Uzbekistan's consular office in Tatarstan confirmed that seven Uzbek citizens were killed, while Tatarstan's regional press service said a child was also among the dead.
The published casualty count remains unsettled. The Associated Press report says 78 people were injured in its opening paragraph but later gives 75 when citing Tatarstan's press service, so this article uses “at least 75”; APPI News could not reconcile the difference.
Ukraine says the Taneco refinery caught fire
Ukraine's General Staff said its forces struck the Taneco oil refinery and started a fire. Russian officials did not identify the drones' targets, although the press service for Tatarstan's leader, Rustam Minnikhanov, said industrial and civilian facilities came under attack.
Neither Russian officials nor the refinery published a damage assessment or an expected shutdown period in the reporting reviewed by APPI News. The effect on the plant's output and on regional fuel supplies could not be verified.
The Associated Press reported that Ukraine had attacked Russian oil facilities with long-range drones almost daily in recent months, reducing refining capacity and contributing to fuel shortages. That wider trend does not establish how much the August 10 strike damaged Taneco or whether it interrupted production.
Kyiv and Moscow offer competing accounts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described long-range strikes as responses to Russian attacks and said the war would increasingly be felt inside Russia. He said Ukraine sought to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations, while Ukraine's military presented attacks on fuel and transport infrastructure as efforts to disrupt Russian military logistics.
Minnikhanov's press service declared August 10 a day of mourning in Tatarstan, and Russia's Foreign Ministry called on foreign governments and international organizations to condemn the attack. The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the Russian and Ukrainian accounts.
Public reporting did not establish whether the hostel was an intended target or document the flight path of the drone that struck it. APPI News also could not independently verify the casualty figures, the refinery fire or the extent of damage at either site.
