As of August 29, 2026, Nintendo said a Nintendo Switch Online family membership covered up to eight Nintendo Accounts in the purchaser's family group. Members do not have to use the same console or live in the same household, but available features can differ by account country or region.
The membership follows the purchaser's current family group, not user profiles on a particular console. Every person who needs the service must use a Nintendo Account in that group, and leaving the group ends that account's coverage.
The limit applies to accounts, not consoles
Nintendo Support says a family group can contain up to eight Nintendo Account users, including accounts with different country settings. The group has one administrator and may also contain general, parent or guardian, and supervised accounts, all within the same eight-account limit.
A family membership can be purchased by anyone aged 18 or older in the group, and the purchaser does not have to be its administrator. Nintendo automatically applies the service to everyone in that group, including members added after the purchase.
The distinction matters because the administrator controls invitations and removals, while the purchaser carries the membership. Paying for the plan does not by itself transfer the administrator role.
Nintendo's UK support FAQ says family members do not have to use the same console or live in the same household, and accounts with different country or region settings can share a membership. The same page says some features are unavailable in some countries or regions, so group membership does not guarantee identical service for every account.
This differs from YouTube's published family-plan rule. YouTube requires every member to live at the same residential address as the family manager and says an electronic check confirms that requirement every 30 days.
The administrator sends invitations from the account website
Nintendo directs the family-group administrator to sign in on the Nintendo Account website, select Family group and Add a member, then enter the email address registered to the invited Nintendo Account. The recipient opens the verification link, signs in and selects Join family group before the account appears in the group.
The administrator counts toward the eight-account limit, as does the purchaser if that is a different person. Nintendo blocks another invitation once the group has eight members, so one account must leave before a replacement can be added.
Nintendo describes acceptance as moving the invited Nintendo Account into the new group. An account already associated with another family group must therefore be removed or moved before the new arrangement takes effect.
There is no worldwide family-membership price
Nintendo of America's purchase guide says membership pricing depends on the plan duration and the country where the service is used. Its country table lists separate pricing routes, rather than a single amount for all markets.
APPI News did not find one worldwide price in the public English support pages reviewed for this guide. The Taiwan-only prices in the source report therefore do not appear here; the relevant amount is the price displayed by Nintendo eShop for the purchaser's account country or region.
Expansion Pack changes the content, not the group limit
Nintendo's UK FAQ says the Expansion Pack includes the standard membership benefits, more classic-game libraries and access to selected downloadable content, and that a family Expansion Pack membership serves every member of the family group. The family group still cannot exceed eight Nintendo Accounts.
The same FAQ says the corresponding full game is required to use included downloadable content and access tied to the membership lasts only while the Expansion Pack membership remains active. Its examples and Nintendo Switch 2 benefits are region- and hardware-specific, so each account's local Nintendo eShop remains the source for current availability.
Leaving changes who remains covered
Nintendo says either the family-group administrator or the Nintendo Account owner can remove a general account, and removal does not delete that Nintendo Account. An administrator must transfer that role before leaving, while a supervised account cannot leave until its status is changed or the account is transferred.
A member who leaves the purchaser's group loses family-membership coverage, while the purchaser's departure removes coverage from everyone remaining in the former group. The membership follows the purchaser rather than staying with the group that person left.
Nintendo says repeatedly joining and leaving family groups can restrict further moves, and that the number of moves within a one-year period is limited according to the maximum family-group size. The page does not publish a fixed threshold, so APPI News could not verify an exact number and Nintendo directs affected account holders to support.
Five checks separate group access from game access
A workable arrangement starts with the Nintendo Accounts, not the number of consoles or user profiles. These checks address the published group rules and the separate limits attached to content and region.
- Count every Nintendo Account, including the administrator and purchaser, and keep the total at eight or fewer.
- Identify the purchaser and administrator separately, and confirm that the purchaser is at least 18 and will remain in the group.
- Check the price, payment options and available features shown for the purchaser's account country or region.
- Send each invitation to the email address registered to that person's Nintendo Account instead of sharing one account among several people.
- For Expansion Pack content, confirm the required game, compatible hardware, account region and active-membership requirement.
The absence of a shared-household condition does not remove account-country restrictions or the consequences of leaving. A family membership is coverage for the purchaser's current Nintendo Account group, not a transferable pool of login credentials.
Frequently asked questions
Do Nintendo Switch Online family members have to live together?
No. Nintendo's UK FAQ says members do not have to share a console or household, although feature availability can differ by country or region.
How many accounts can use one family membership?
Up to eight Nintendo Accounts can receive coverage through the purchaser's family group. The administrator and purchaser each count toward that limit when they are different people.
Can accounts from different countries share the membership?
Yes, Nintendo allows different country or region settings in one covered family group. Available features and Expansion Pack content may still differ among those accounts.
What happens after an account leaves the family group?
An ordinary departing member loses the shared service but keeps the Nintendo Account. If the membership purchaser leaves, everyone who remains in the former group loses that purchaser's coverage.
How many times can an account change family groups in one year?
Nintendo says repeated moves are limited within a one-year period but does not publish a fixed number on the reviewed support page. APPI News could not verify a universal numerical threshold.
