A YouTube Premium family invitation can fail before the recipient joins the group. The usual checks cover the Google Account type, an existing family group, the 12-month switching rule, Google Play country and the household address.

Only the family manager can send the invitation and manage the membership. Checking the account and location conditions first is more useful than pressing “Send” repeatedly.

YouTube family plans cover up to six accounts at one residential address; this guide focuses on the narrower problem of an invitation that cannot be sent, accepted or completed.

Start with the family manager's account

YouTube says the family manager is the primary account holder who creates the Google family group, buys the family plan and invites members. The manager can invite up to five other people, so a full group has six accounts including the manager.

Google's setup instructions direct the manager to the YouTube account linked to the paid membership, then to Purchases and memberships, the membership itself and Family sharing settings. The manager selects Edit, chooses Invite a new member, enters an email address or phone number, and sends the invitation.

A regular member account does not provide the same controls. If the invitation option is missing, check whether the signed-in account is the one that pays for YouTube Premium and manages the family group. Do not remove an existing member simply to test the button: removal changes access for that person.

Check the recipient's account and family-group history

YouTube requires family-plan members to use a Google Account and says a Google Workspace account cannot start or join the plan. A work, school or other organization account may sign in to YouTube normally and still fail this check. The recipient needs a regular personal Google Account associated with the address or phone number that received the invitation.

When more than one Google Account is active on a phone or browser, open the invitation while signed in to the matching account. Accepting an invitation from a different account does not transfer eligibility to the intended recipient.

Google says a person can belong to only one family group at a time, and an account from work, school or another organization cannot be added to a family group. The recipient should check Google's family-group dashboard before accepting a new invitation.

Google also says a family-group change is allowed only once every 12 months. Leaving an old group may not make the new invitation available immediately. If the error mentions a previous family group or a 12-month wait, resending the invitation does not remove the account-level restriction.

Match the country and household requirements

Google requires family-plan members to live at the same residential address as the manager, with an electronic check-in every 30 days. Being related, sharing a payment card or living in the same country does not replace the same-household condition.

The same help page says a member whose country or region does not match the manager's location cannot join the family group. That makes the account's Google Pay or Google Play country relevant even when both people are physically nearby.

Do not use a VPN or a false billing location to force an invitation through. YouTube's location policy says users should not misrepresent their location or bypass availability restrictions, and a subscription can be canceled when the service detects that behavior.

How this plays out outside Taiwan

YouTube does not publish one global family-plan price that applies to every reader. YouTube's locations page lists the countries and territories where Premium and Music Premium memberships are available, but that list answers whether the broader service is offered. It does not by itself prove that every plan type, promotion or billing route appears for every account in that market.

A reader in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or Singapore should begin at the signed-in YouTube Premium purchase page for the account's own country. The page can show the available plan, currency and account-specific offer. A price copied from another country, a search result or an old screenshot is not enough to establish what the account can buy today. This guide does not state a local price because a public logged-out price was not verified for each market.

Australia. YouTube's family-plan requirements name Australia as a market where the service is available and require both the manager and the member to use Google Accounts, belong to no other family group and meet the 12-month switching rule. An Australian account can therefore pass the broad service-availability check and still fail because the recipient uses a Workspace account, belongs to another group or is registered under a different country setting.

For an Australian household, the practical sequence is to open the manager's paid-membership page, verify that the family option is displayed, and then compare the family-group status of the two accounts. The two people must also live at the same residential address. If the invitation is accepted but Premium access later pauses, the warning may concern the household check rather than the original invitation. The public help page does not disclose the full technical signals behind that assessment.

United Kingdom. The general Premium locations page lists the United Kingdom among the markets where Premium memberships are available. That establishes broader service availability, not a guaranteed family-plan offer for every UK account. A UK reader should check the signed-in YouTube page for the family option and then apply the family-group requirements. The country on the account and the manager's country still need to match for a member to join.

The distinction matters when a household moves or when one person keeps an account created in another market. Changing the device language, using a UK IP address or entering a UK payment method does not by itself prove that Google's account location has changed. Google's family-group troubleshooting page tells managers and members to use the same Google Play country. If that condition is not met, the useful next step is to review the official country-profile instructions rather than resend the invitation.

United States. YouTube's family-plan page describes the same five-member limit, regular-account requirement and same-residence rule for its supported markets. The page does not make a separate US price part of the eligibility test. A US reader should rely on the offer shown after signing in, because the account's billing route and current plan menu can differ from a public help page.

A US reader should also avoid treating a failed invitation as evidence that the recipient needs a new email address. If the recipient has already changed family groups within the last 12 months, a second address connected to the same ineligible account history may not solve the problem. Google's join-or-leave guidance confirms that a person who switches family groups must wait 12 months before switching again. The account status needs to be checked before anyone leaves an existing group.

Singapore and other markets. The same process applies where the broader Premium service is listed but the family offer is not visible. YouTube's location page is the official place to check whether Premium is offered in a country or territory; the signed-in purchase page is the better place to check the plan type and price for a particular account. If the family option is absent, readers should not infer that a family invitation can be enabled by changing currency, using a VPN or borrowing another country's payment profile.

These market checks also explain why screenshots from another country are weak evidence. A family group may be technically valid in one market while a member's country profile, payment profile or current plan offer prevents the same arrangement elsewhere. Record the exact error, the countries shown in both accounts and the plan displayed to the manager before contacting support. That information is more useful than repeated invitations and avoids turning a market-availability question into a guess about the account's private status.

Resend only after the error is understood

Google says an invited member receives the invitation by email or phone, and the manager must remove an unaccepted invite before adding that person again. If the recipient never received the message, first confirm the address or phone number and the Google Account currently in use. Then inspect the family-group member list before sending another invitation.

If the screen names a Workspace account, another family group, a 12-month restriction or a country mismatch, fix or verify that condition first. If the accounts meet the published rules but the invitation still fails, save the error screen and contact YouTube support through the help page. Public documentation does not expose every internal eligibility field, so repeated attempts cannot reveal the missing condition.

Quick checklist

1. The family manager is signed in to the Google Account linked to the YouTube paid membership.

2. The family group has fewer than five invited members and the manager is using the family-sharing settings.

3. The recipient uses a regular Google Account, not a Google Workspace account, and accepts the invitation from that account.

4. The recipient is not in another family group and has not changed groups within the previous 12 months.

5. The manager and member use the same Google Play country and live at the same residential address.

6. Only after those checks pass should the manager resend the invitation. If it still fails, keep the error details and contact YouTube support.

Frequently asked questions

Can changing the recipient's email address remove the restriction?
No. A new address does not remove a Workspace-account restriction, an existing family group or the 12-month switching rule.

Can a school or company Google Workspace account join?
No. YouTube requires a regular Google Account for a family plan. The organization may have separate Workspace policies and licenses.

Does Premium availability in a country guarantee a family-plan invitation will work?
No. The country list covers the broader Premium service. The signed-in offer, account history, country profile and same-residence requirements still apply.
