As of August 29, 2026, YouTube said one family manager could share a Premium or Music Premium membership with up to five other people at the same residential address. Each person uses a separate Google Account, while YouTube checks the address requirement electronically every 30 days.

The family plan can serve six people in total, but it is not a general account-sharing option. The manager controls the purchase and membership, members' basic profile details become visible to the group, and moving to a different family group is restricted.

One manager controls a plan for up to six people

YouTube says a family manager can share a paid membership with up to five household members, each using a separate Google Account with an individual library, subscriptions, recommendations and viewing history. The manager is the primary account holder and creates the Google family group used for the membership.

The manager must be at least 18, or the applicable age in that location, and is the only person who can buy the family plan or make membership decisions. A regular Google Account is required because a Google Workspace account cannot start or join a YouTube family plan.

Eligibility turns on address, location and group history

YouTube requires each member to live at the same residential address as the manager, live where the relevant paid service is available, belong to no other family group and have made no family-group switch in the previous 12 months. A family relationship, shared payment or occasional visit does not replace the published same-address condition.

APPI News found no universal family-plan price in the English help pages reviewed for this report, so no single amount applies to this international guide. The guide therefore leaves the price to the offer displayed to the manager during purchase.

The manager buys the plan and sends invitations

YouTube's browser instructions direct a new manager to the family-plan purchase page, where an existing Google family group can be confirmed or a new group created after purchase. An existing individual member can use the paid-memberships page to upgrade, but an annual-plan subscriber must wait for that plan to expire.

To add someone, the manager opens Paid memberships, selects Manage membership, edits Family sharing settings and sends an invitation to an email address or phone number. The invited person accepts through the email or text message and confirms a separate Google Account.

An ordinary member of an existing Google family group cannot buy a family plan for that group. Only its manager can make the purchase, invite up to five members and remove members.

Basic profile details are visible, but histories stay separate

Google says each member's name, photo and email address are shared with the family group. This is group-level profile disclosure, not a requirement to share a password, because each member joins with a separate account.

YouTube says it does not share viewing preferences or watch history across member accounts, and each person keeps a separate library, subscriptions and recommendations. Removal from the family group does not delete the person's Google Account.

A 30-day check enforces the address requirement

YouTube's setup page says an electronic check-in confirms every 30 days that each member lives at the same residential address as the manager. The page does not identify the data inputs, their weighting or a device-by-device pass standard, so APPI News could not verify how a particular account will be assessed.

YouTube says an in-app warning that Premium access will be paused means it could not confirm that the member is in the same household as the manager. The company directs that member to the account-specific email for next steps; APPI News has a separate review of the 30-day check and the limits of YouTube's public explanation.

A country or region error during initial setup is a different issue. Google says “Family is not supported” or “Country is not supported” may appear when the Google Pay country or region does not match the current location, and advises updating that payments profile for setup.

Removal, cancellation and switching have different effects

A manager can remove a member at any time; the removed person loses the shared YouTube membership and other family services but keeps the Google Account. Google says it also emails the removed person and notifies the other group members.

If the manager cancels the paid membership, access continues through the end of the monthly billing cycle, after which every member loses the paid benefits but keeps a Google Account. Cancellation ends the shared paid membership; it does not merge or erase the members' separate accounts.

A member can leave the group and buy an individual membership, but a move to a different family group is allowed only once every 12 months. Leaving one group and joining another starts a new 12-month wait before another switch.

Individual, two-person and student plans follow different rules

YouTube describes individual monthly plans as single-user memberships, two-person plans as shared memberships for two people in the same household, and family plans as covering up to six people. The two-person option changes the number of covered members, not the same-household condition.

The same plan overview separates student membership from household sharing. YouTube says student plans are for full-time students at approved higher-education institutions, require annual third-party verification and run for no more than four years.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can use a YouTube Premium family plan?
The limit is six: one family manager and up to five members. Each member uses a separate Google Account and must meet the household and family-group requirements.

Can relatives at different addresses join the same plan?
No. YouTube's published rule requires the manager and every member to share one residential address; a family relationship does not create an exception.

What information can family-group members see?
Names, profile photos and email addresses are shared within the group. YouTube says libraries, subscriptions, recommendations and viewing histories remain separate.

What happens when the manager cancels?
Paid benefits continue until the current monthly billing cycle ends. All members then lose the shared membership, but their Google Accounts remain intact.
