Google opened its Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL extended repair program on December 8, 2025, offering eligible phones three years of coverage from the original retail-purchase date for a bottom-to-top vertical display line. The repair facility still inspects each phone, and cracked glass, liquid intrusion or unavailable support in a particular country can prevent a no-charge display replacement.

The program shows why a green line is not a warranty category by itself. A warranty request starts with the exact model and market, then adds the phone's condition, purchase record and the result of a physical inspection.

A fixed line is a symptom, not a diagnosis

Samsung Semiconductor says a display driver integrated circuit controls the transistors in a display's red, green and blue subpixels, including the gate and source signals used to create colors. The source establishes the driver's role in producing the image, but it does not identify the failed part in an individual phone.

Samsung's US troubleshooting page says temporary system errors, outdated software, settings and physical impact can produce abnormal display behavior, and it directs Galaxy owners to restart, check updates and inspect for damage. A separate Samsung US page says some third-party protective films can make horizontal or vertical lines appear on the display.

The same visible symptom can require different checks on different phone models.

A low-risk first pass records the line with another camera, restarts the phone once and follows the device maker's current display-troubleshooting steps. Persistence after those checks does not show that a nearby software update caused the fault; an inspection is still needed to identify the cause.

Warranty coverage depends on the exact model and damage

Google's extended program covers only the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL symptoms it lists. A qualifying vertical line must run from the bottom to the top of the display, while display flicker also qualifies on the Pixel 9 Pro; other faults may fall under a different warranty or a paid repair.

The Google page says the facility verifies eligibility before providing a display replacement at no charge. It also says support options may not exist in every country and that the program sits alongside statutory rights under the consumer law of the country where the phone was purchased.

  1. Device identity. The service record needs the full model name, serial number or International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), and country of purchase.
  2. Timeline. The receipt and a note of when the line first appeared, whether the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid and which checks were tried preserve the relevant chronology.
  3. Physical condition. External photographs can record the line, glass, frame, ports and back before handover.
  4. Special programs. A search of the manufacturer's support site for the exact model can reveal coverage beyond the standard warranty.
  5. Written result. The service provider's report should state the eligibility decision, observed damage, repair scope and price.

How this plays out outside Taiwan

United States: A current manufacturer table provides a benchmark for out-of-warranty work, not a price promise for a green-line claim. As of September 5, 2026, Samsung US listed suggested front-screen repair prices of US$174 for the Galaxy S23, US$194 for the S23+ and US$259 for the S23 Ultra; screen-module replacement was listed at US$209, US$249 and US$319, respectively. Samsung describes the first service as replacement of only the front screen and the second as replacement of the screen, bezel and battery. The company says prices can vary by region or authorized service location, exclude taxes and fees, and depend on inspection; its front-screen option also excludes phones with a bent or broken frame, a swollen battery or another detected hardware failure.

For US consumers, the US Federal Trade Commission says federal law generally bars a manufacturer from requiring specific branded parts or services merely to preserve warranty coverage, unless those parts or services are free or the agency grants a waiver. That rule does not create coverage for every display fault; the written warranty still defines the repairs it promises. The agency also says implied warranties arise under state law and can last as long as four years in some states, so there is no single implied-warranty period to quote for the entire country. It advises consumers to retain the written warranty and receipt, while photographs and a written inspection decision can preserve the facts specific to a display-line claim.

United Kingdom: Samsung UK publishes model-specific recommended prices through a selector instead of a universal screen fee; the page separates screen repair from an inspection-only charge and says additional work can change the price after inspection. It says screen service uses genuine parts and can include glass, panel, frame and battery work, although a battery is not required for every repair. UK government guidance says a retailer must repair or replace an item returned within six months unless it can prove the item was not faulty when purchased; after six months, the retailer can ask the customer for proof that the fault existed at purchase. The same guidance says an expired commercial warranty does not by itself remove these rights, so a statutory claim to the retailer and a manufacturer's special repair program are separate routes.

Australia: Samsung Australia's repair estimator requires the product model and reported issue, labels the result an estimate and says the final quote follows a full assessment by an authorized Samsung technician. A saved estimate can establish what the site showed before handover, but it cannot establish whether a vertical line is covered or what the technician will find. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the seller must handle remedies rather than direct a consumer only to the manufacturer; a major product problem gives the consumer a choice of refund or replacement, while a minor problem must at least be repaired free. The agency also says a business repairing an electronic product such as a mobile phone must warn the consumer about possible data loss and the possible use of refurbished products or parts.

Singapore: Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry says the country's Lemon Law framework lets a retailer offer repair or replacement of defective goods within a reasonable period and with minimal inconvenience; a price reduction or refund can follow when those remedies are not possible or reasonable. The ministry says a defect found within six months of delivery is presumed to have existed at delivery unless the retailer proves otherwise or the presumption is incompatible with the goods or defect; after six months, the consumer has to prove that point. The presumption concerns whether the phone conformed to the sales contract at delivery and is not an automatic finding that every green line is a manufacturing defect. The ministry directs consumers to the Consumers Association of Singapore for guidance and identifies Singapore's Small Claims Tribunals as a route when legal action is required.

These markets therefore produce different claim files even when the visible symptom looks the same. The useful common record is the exact model, purchase country and date, receipt, serial number or IMEI, photographs of the phone's condition, a video of the line and the service provider's written findings. A quote should identify whether it covers only the front screen or a larger assembly, while the eligibility decision should identify whether it was made under a commercial warranty, a special program or the consumer law of the country of purchase.

Data protection starts before inspection or reset

Samsung says Maintenance Mode creates a separate account that lets a technician use core functions without access to the owner's photos, documents, messages or installed apps. The company says the feature is available on selected Galaxy devices running One UI 5 or later, varies by market, model and network provider, and does not replace a backup.

Google likewise tells eligible Pixel 9 Pro owners to run Backup now and enter Repair mode before service. The program page gives both steps and does not treat Repair mode as a substitute for the backup.

Owners need to verify that photos, contacts, messages and required app data can be restored before handover. Account-recovery information also needs to remain available somewhere other than the phone being repaired.

Repair quotes cannot be converted into a global price

Google says Pixel repair estimates depend on warranty status, the issue or damage, the repair partner and the location, and it requires an IMEI or serial number for a model-specific estimate. If a mail-in inspection finds additional work, Google says it emails an updated cost and allows 10 days to accept or decline it.

A price published for one country cannot be converted into a global repair price. Currency conversion does not account for different parts bundles, labor, taxes, service partners or warranty terms.

Samsung's UK support site distinguishes a complete screen replacement from a partial repair that reuses the front case, and says partial repair is limited to certain models and damage conditions. That regional example supports asking what a quote replaces, but it does not prove that the same repair option exists for another model or country.

Compare quotes only after confirming that they cover the same parts and work.

A written quote needs to name the display part or assembly, labor, taxes, diagnostic or shipping fees and any charge for declining the repair. It also needs the source of the replacement part, the warranty on parts and work, the expected turnaround and the process if inspection finds more damage.

Program claims start with the designated repair route

Google directs claims under its Pixel program to a Google walk-in center, an authorized center or its online repair channel. Starting elsewhere can make it harder to obtain the program's eligibility decision before any paid work changes the phone.

Outside a warranty or special program, an independent shop may offer a different repair scope or price. Any remaining manufacturer coverage needs to be checked before work begins, and competing quotes need to cover the same parts, data handling and after-service warranty.

A repair price becomes comparable with replacement only after its scope and warranty are clear.

A permanent green line can justify an inspection, but the color alone does not establish the cause, price or warranty result. The defensible sequence is to document the symptom, complete low-risk vendor checks, protect the data and obtain a model- and country-specific inspection before approving work.

Frequently asked questions

Can a restart or software update remove a green line?
A restart can clear a temporary display error, and manufacturers may include an update among their troubleshooting steps. A line that persists still needs inspection because those steps do not identify a hardware fault or prove that an update caused it.

Does a vertical line automatically qualify for a free repair?
No. Google's current program requires an eligible Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL, a listed symptom and a successful inspection, while damage and country availability can affect the result.

How much does a green-line screen repair cost?
There is no verified global price. The amount depends on the model, market, warranty result, damage and whether the provider replaces part of the display or a larger assembly.

Is Repair mode a substitute for a backup?
No. Samsung says Maintenance Mode restricts access to personal data during service but still encourages owners to back up before activation, because a privacy mode does not provide a restorable copy.
