An aviation publication reported that Vietnam's Bamboo Airways halted scheduled passenger flights on August 1, 2026, during a financial restructuring. Aviation News Europe said the airline had removed sales for major domestic routes and was operating charter services with one active aircraft.

APPI News could not find a suspension notice from Bamboo Airways or Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority at the time of writing. The carrier's public support pages remained available, so passengers should verify each flight through the booking record and obtain written confirmation of any cancellation before starting a claim.

Start with the company that took the payment

The receipt or card statement identifies the first company to contact. A direct airline booking goes to the airline, while a ticket bought through an online or storefront agency normally starts with that agency. Bamboo Airways instructs customers to contact the office or agent where the ticket was purchased and asks direct online customers to submit their booking reference, ticket number, itinerary, passenger name and travel date.

A refund request should state whether the passenger rejects a voucher or replacement itinerary and wants money returned to the original payment method. The booking confirmation, e-ticket, payment record, cancellation notice and correspondence should be saved together. These records show that the service was not delivered and that the seller had an opportunity to resolve the problem.

The seller route and the card-dispute route can overlap, but duplicate reimbursement is not allowed. A passenger who receives a refund after opening a card case should notify the issuer so that the same transaction is not recovered twice.

A card dispute has deadlines, not a guaranteed refund

A cardholder can ask the issuing bank about a dispute for services not provided when the airline or agent does not refund a canceled flight. The bank, rather than Visa or Mastercard customer service, handles the passenger's case. The card statement may list an agent as the merchant even when another airline was due to operate the flight.

Mastercard's May 2026 merchant guide generally requires an issuer to file a services-not-provided chargeback within 120 calendar days. For a flight or another service scheduled for a future date, that period can run from the latest expected performance date; an issuer may act immediately after learning that the merchant will not provide the service. The guide also sets a 540-day outer limit for some interrupted-service cases.

Those are network processing rules for financial institutions, not a promise that every passenger has 120 days to contact a bank. Issuer procedures and local law may impose other notice requirements, and the merchant can contest the claim. Contacting the issuer promptly avoids relying on the longest possible interpretation of a deadline.

Passenger rights follow the flight, not the language of the website

There is no single international refund regime for a canceled flight. The International Civil Aviation Organization says states have adopted their own measures for cancellations, refunds and other passenger protections. The applicable route can depend on the departure and arrival countries, the operating carrier and whether the booking was a flight alone or part of a package.

European Union rules give passengers on covered canceled flights a choice among reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity or rerouting later under comparable conditions. Coverage generally includes flights within the European Union, flights departing from it on any airline and flights arriving there on an EU airline, subject to the detailed conditions on the EU portal.

US Department of Transportation rules entitle passengers to a refund when an airline cancels a flight to, from or within the United States and the passenger does not accept alternative travel or compensation. For a qualifying direct booking, the department says the refund is due within seven business days for a credit-card purchase or 20 calendar days for another payment method.

A regulator or dispute-resolution body is therefore selected by the flight and contract, not by the passenger's nationality alone. A complaint should cite the rule that covers that itinerary and include the seller's final response or proof that it failed to answer.

Insurance and package protection require a coverage check

Travel insurance does not automatically cover an airline's suspension or insolvency. The policy may cover only the unused original fare, the extra cost of replacement travel, or neither. The insured cause, exclusions, purchase date and claim deadline control the result.

National package-travel schemes also differ from travel insurance and may not cover a flight-only sale. The UK Civil Aviation Authority's guidance on failed scheduled airlines tells passengers to check card protection, contact the booking agent and review whether their insurance includes scheduled-airline failure. That UK guidance is an example of a national route, not a rule for bookings made elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Should a passenger wait for the airline before contacting the card issuer?
The seller should receive a written refund request, but a passenger should also ask the issuer about its deadline promptly. Waiting for a long airline process can consume part of the dispute period.

Does the 120-day Mastercard period begin on the purchase date?
Not in every case. The May 2026 guide uses different starting events, including the settlement date, the expected service date or the date an ongoing service stopped, depending on the facts.

Does an airline voucher end a refund claim?
That depends on whether the passenger accepted it and on the law governing the flight. Passengers seeking cash should communicate that choice before using a voucher or accepting replacement travel.

Can cash or bank-transfer payments be disputed through a card network?
No card dispute exists when no card funded the transaction. The available routes are the seller, any applicable passenger-rights or package-protection process, and insurance if the policy covers the loss.
