Nvidia has agreed to invest US$2 billion for roughly 20 percent of Lancium and could add US$1 billion as the US power-infrastructure developer secures more planned capacity, The Information reported on August 7, citing three people familiar with the transaction. The second tranche could lift Nvidia’s holding to about 30 percent, according to the report.
The report put Lancium’s enterprise value, including debt, at about US$10 billion. Nvidia and Lancium had not announced the transaction by August 14, and APPI News could not independently verify its terms.
The second tranche depends on power milestones
The initial US$2 billion and the conditional US$1 billion do not carry the same certainty. The Information said the later investment would follow milestones at additional Lancium campuses, including grid connections, but public summaries of the report did not identify every threshold or a closing date.
Nvidia separately announced on August 10 that it had signed memorandums of understanding with six financial groups, including Blackstone, to create platforms intended to mobilize more than US$500 billion of third-party capital for AI infrastructure. That release did not name Lancium and said the financing partnerships remained subject to final agreements.
Lancium controls sites and power connections
Lancium and data center developer Crusoe describe their operating model this way: Lancium owns the land, secures the grid interconnection and manages energy systems, while Crusoe designs, builds and operates the data center. The companies said in July that they were reusing the Abilene model for a planned 1 GW campus in Childress, also in the US state of Texas.
Lancium says its Abilene campus has a 1.2 GW interconnection fully approved by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the operator of most of the US state’s power grid. The 1.2 GW figure is an interconnection rating, not a reading of electricity currently flowing to operating servers.
Abilene is operating, while full completion remains unverified
The Associated Press reported on March 27 that Crusoe had completed two Abilene buildings for OpenAI and Oracle and was still building six more, then due by the end of 2026. The report also said a 350 MW gas-fired plant was attached to the project as backup power, while the data centers primarily drew from a regional grid that includes nearby wind generation.
OpenAI’s January 2025 launch announcement named SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX as Stargate’s initial equity funders, and listed Nvidia among its key technology partners. The reported Lancium transaction would therefore be a separate ownership stake in an infrastructure developer, not an equity purchase in Stargate itself.
Debt and future sites shape the reported valuation
Lancium said it closed a US$600 million debt package on October 16, 2025, to support the Abilene site and give it flexibility to fund other projects. Enterprise value includes debt and is not interchangeable with equity value; the public report did not provide enough balance-sheet detail to reconcile its US$10 billion enterprise value with the reported stake price.
Lancium and Crusoe announced the Childress project in July, but said construction was scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and did not name the customer. A planned 1 GW connection at that site is not operating capacity or guaranteed future revenue.
Global electricity demand meets physical bottlenecks
The International Energy Agency said global data center electricity use rose 17 percent in 2025 to 485 TWh, while consumption at AI-focused sites increased 50 percent; it projects overall data center use will reach about 950 TWh in 2030. The agency also said bottlenecks in energy supply chains, grid connections and advanced chip manufacturing were constraining near-term development.
The reported Lancium structure places part of Nvidia’s investment behind the physical delivery of more power connections. That may give the chipmaker exposure to sites capable of hosting customers that use its systems, but neither the report nor the companies have published purchase commitments tied to the proposed stake.
What remains unverified
The transaction still rests on reporting from unnamed sources. APPI News could not find a public Nvidia or Lancium announcement, regulatory filing, closing date or complete milestone list for the investment as of August 14, 2026.
APPI News also could not find a later primary-source notice confirming that all six additional Abilene buildings had been completed. Public sources establish that the first two buildings were operating and that Lancium had an approved 1.2 GW interconnection, but they do not establish current campus-wide electricity use.
