On August 31, 2026, official plan pages listed ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro at US$20 a month, while Google AI Pro showed a US price of US$19.99. Those near-identical headline prices conceal different billing periods, bundled products, sharing rules and usage meters.
A useful comparison starts with the work that repeats every week, then checks which plan covers it with the least duplication. Storage, coding tools or family access carry value only when the subscriber will use them, while a low monthly price loses its advantage if variable limits interrupt the main task.
US prices cluster around US$20 a month
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at US$20 per month under its individual pricing options. Google's United States plan page lists Google AI Pro at US$19.99 per month, with 5 terabytes (TB) of storage and Gemini usage limits four times those for users without a Google AI plan. Anthropic lists Claude Pro at US$20 on monthly billing or US$200 paid up front for a year, an average of about US$17 per month before tax.
| Plan | Public US-dollar price | Billing point to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | US$20 per month | The cited page shows an individual monthly price; local account terms remain controlling |
| Google AI Pro | US$19.99 per month on the US page | Displayed price and bundled benefits can change with country and account |
| Claude Pro | US$20 monthly or US$200 annually | The annual saving requires a full-year payment in advance |
The table is a price snapshot, not a worldwide checkout quote. Anthropic says local currency and tax treatment vary by region, Google changes its page by selected country, and the reviewed OpenAI page does not provide a complete country-by-country checkout table. Buyers need the final price, tax, renewal date and refund terms shown for the account that will pay.
The three plans bundle different kinds of work
ChatGPT Plus centers the purchase on an individual ChatGPT account. OpenAI's cited pricing page includes ChatGPT Work and Codex in Plus and lists application programming interface (API) key use separately as a pay-per-token option. The page supports a subscriber who wants OpenAI's chat and coding surfaces under one personal plan, while API use retains its own billing structure.
Google AI Pro combines AI access with a larger Google One package. Google lists expanded access to Gemini and Deep Research, Gemini features in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, higher access in Gemini Notebook, creative tools, developer tools, 5 TB of storage and family sharing with up to five others. Some listed features are restricted to the United States or another subset of markets, so the bundle shown to one account cannot be applied to every country.
Claude Pro emphasizes Anthropic's project and work tools. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Design, Claude Science, unlimited projects, Research and access to more Claude models. Anthropic describes Pro as an individual consumer plan and says it does not include API use through the Claude Console.
The practical question is whether a bundled product replaces an existing cost or adds an unused extra. A subscriber who already needs 5 TB of Google storage may value Google AI Pro differently from someone whose files sit elsewhere, while a developer who does not use Claude Code gains no benefit from counting it as a saving.
Family sharing creates the clearest structural difference
Google lets a Google One plan manager share with up to five family members, requires members to use personal Google Accounts and live in the same country as the manager, and keeps each person's files private unless that person shares them. Shared storage begins after a member uses the personal allocation, and each member can see how much shared storage the others consume.
The label “family sharing” does not mean every benefit moves to every account. Google says YouTube Premium Lite and Google Developer Program premium remain with the plan manager, while Google Home Premium has separate country and member restrictions. Each benefit needs its own eligibility check.
OpenAI places Plus in the individual section of its pricing page and does not list a family tier there. Anthropic also presents Pro as an individual plan and moves multi-user administration into its Team offering rather than a household product. An official family invitation and a shared password or privately resold slot create different access and recovery structures.
Usage limits follow different meters
OpenAI does not give one permanent message number for every Plus task on the cited page. For ChatGPT Work and Codex, it says consumption depends on the model, task size, complexity, context, reasoning, tools, retrieval and caching. That makes a short request and a long agent task poor substitutes for one another in a message-count comparison.
Google says each product inside AI Pro has its own usage limit and that the applicable limit depends on the feature and plan. Its four-times figure compares Gemini access with access for users who have no Google AI plan; it does not promise four times the work for every prompt. Google also sells AI credits for extra use in selected products after a plan limit is reached.
Anthropic publishes a more explicit time structure. Its Pro support page says the session limit resets every five hours, a weekly limit applies across all models, and message capacity varies with attached files, conversation length, model and feature. The company also says paid users may enable usage credits after exhausting included capacity.
A comparable test uses the same three recurring jobs on each service and records the model, files, elapsed time, retries and limit notices. One long-document task, one research task and one coding or structured-output task usually reveal more than a vendor's relative multiplier because they approximate the work that will consume the plan.
Student offers are campaigns, not permanent plan features
Google's current student page lists a no-cost 12-month Google AI Pro trial for eligible higher-education students in the United States and a separate AI Pro bundle with YouTube Premium Student in supported markets. Both routes require student verification through SheerID, a personal Google Account and a qualifying payment method, while the offer page defines country exclusions and renewal conditions.
Google says the student plan converts to a regular paid plan when the offer ends unless local law requires consent, and it asks bundle participants to reverify their status, usually every 12 months. Anthropic says it has no standing Pro discount available on request, although it may run limited promotions. APPI News could not verify a current ChatGPT Plus student offer that applies across countries from the official OpenAI pages reviewed for this comparison.
A student therefore needs to record the exact plan name, eligibility country, verification date, no-cost or discounted period, next charge and storage change after cancellation. A screenshot from another country or an expired campaign does not establish eligibility for the account making the purchase.
Country and account settings can change the package
Google's AI Pro help page marks several features as United States-only and limits others by country, device, language or age. The same page says the YouTube Premium Lite benefit is for the plan manager and is unavailable during an AI Pro trial until the account converts to a paid subscription. Service availability and benefit availability are therefore separate checks.
Anthropic says Claude Pro is available only in supported locations, displays local currency where supported and may include tax in the displayed price or add it at checkout. Google also changes prices and benefits by selected country. The reviewed public OpenAI page gave a US-dollar Plus price, but APPI News could not verify a single official table covering every country's consumer checkout total.
Anthropic directs buyers to its web upgrade page or a mobile app store for the current local price, making the billing channel another variable. The safest comparison uses the same country, billing channel and account type for all three services, then records which benefits are actually present before payment.
A one-week workload test exposes the total cost
A free tier or short monthly subscription can supply evidence before an annual commitment. The test should use ordinary work rather than demonstration prompts, because the aim is to measure completion, correction and interruption under the subscriber's real files and task length.
- List three weekly tasks. Define the input, required output and acceptable completion time for each one.
- Use the same materials. Run comparable documents, code or research questions through every candidate without changing the success criteria.
- Record the full workflow. Count setup, file handling, retries, manual corrections and movement between applications.
- Watch the meters. Note model restrictions, five-hour or weekly resets, product credits and any paid overage option.
- Separate users. Confirm whether each person receives an account, which benefits can be shared and who controls billing or removal.
- Capture the exit terms. Save the checkout total, renewal date, cancellation effect and any change to stored files or account capacity.
A plan passes when it completes the required work within the time and correction budget, not when it has the longest feature list. If two plans pass, monthly billing preserves flexibility while the buyer measures a complete work cycle; an annual commitment makes sense only after the recurring saving exceeds the cost of being locked into the wrong workflow.
Match the plan to the workflow, then verify the account
| Workflow to test first | Plan to include in the test | Condition to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Individual work centered on ChatGPT and Codex | ChatGPT Plus | Current account tools, variable limits and separate API costs |
| Work concentrated in Google apps, cloud storage or a qualifying family group | Google AI Pro | Country-specific features and which benefits reach family members |
| Projects, Research, Claude Code or other Claude work tools | Claude Pro | Five-hour and weekly usage, annual prepayment and separate API billing |
The table supplies a testing order, not a universal winner. A household may give Google AI Pro priority because several eligible members can use parts of the plan, while a single developer may obtain more value from the coding environment that completes the work with fewer corrections.
Cross-platform work needs a duplication check. Paying for two plans that both handle occasional text questions is harder to justify than using one paid plan for the main workload and a free tier for overflow, unless the second service supplies a tested capability or fallback that the first does not.
Renewal and exit deserve the same check as sign-up
Subscription pages can change model names, limits, storage and regional benefits without preserving the earlier comparison. Before payment, the buyer can save the price, plan name, renewal date, billing period and family terms shown in the account, then repeat that check before renewal.
Claude's lower annual average requires US$200 up front, while Google's student offers can become paid plans after the offer period. A Google One downgrade can also leave members above their personal storage allowance after shared capacity ends. These effects make exit cost part of the initial price comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Which of the three plans is cheapest?
The reviewed US pages cluster within one cent per month: Google AI Pro at US$19.99 and ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro at US$20. Claude's US$200 annual option lowers its monthly average, but taxes, currencies and local checkout prices can change the comparison.
Which plan supports a household?
Google AI Pro is the only one of the three reviewed personal plans that publishes family sharing with up to five other people. Eligibility and benefits remain product-specific, and several bundled benefits stay with the plan manager.
Does a paid plan provide unlimited AI use?
No reviewed page supports that description. OpenAI identifies task-dependent consumption for Work and Codex, Google assigns separate limits to products, and Anthropic applies five-hour and weekly limits to Claude Pro.
Do all students receive a free AI plan?
No. Google's current no-cost 12-month AI Pro trial is limited to eligible students in the United States, while other offers use separate market lists and verification rules. APPI News could not verify one current student offer covering all three providers and every country.
Is an annual subscription the best starting point?
An annual plan reduces Claude Pro's average monthly price but raises the cost of a poor fit. A monthly test using repeated work provides evidence on limits, correction time and tool use before a longer commitment.
