OpenAI bars sharing ChatGPT login credentials between users

As of August 31, 2026, OpenAI's account-sharing policy says each ChatGPT account is for the person who created it, while the company's consumer terms prohibit credential sharing. The same person may sign in on multiple devices, but device access does not give another person permission to use the account.

Shared use can expose conversations and payment details, trigger a security alert and place the account under another person's control. Separate accounts, Business seats and shared conversation links address different needs without handing over the login.

Multiple devices do not make one login a group account

OpenAI's consumer terms prohibit an account holder from sharing credentials or making the account available to another person, and they assign responsibility for activity under the account to its holder. The company serves different consumer terms according to residence, but the credential rule appears in both regional versions reviewed by APPI News.

OpenAI's account-sharing policy says an account is intended for its creator and directs anyone else who needs the products to open a separate account. It permits the account holder to use multiple devices, subject to usage limits tied to account activity and subscription level. A Plus subscription changes the service tier; it does not change who may use the login.

Suspicious-activity alerts are warnings, not automatic findings

OpenAI lists sign-ins from unexpected locations or devices, sudden activity or setting changes, and an unusual number of concurrent sessions as possible reasons for a suspicious-activity alert. The Help Center says these alerts are often cautionary and do not necessarily establish wrongdoing; it also says sharing an account may trigger them.

OpenAI instructs a recipient to change to a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication and log out of all devices. If restrictions persist, its checklist adds browser and device troubleshooting before contacting Support with timestamps, screenshots and technical details.

OpenAI's consumer terms reserve the right to restrict, suspend or terminate access when the company determines that a user breached the terms or that the use could cause risk or harm. Neither the terms nor the alert page says every shared login produces an automatic suspension, and the terms provide an appeal route through Support for an account holder who believes a decision was mistaken.

Plus is billed to one account; Business uses separate seats

OpenAI listed ChatGPT Plus at US$20 a month on August 31, 2026, billed monthly, and said it did not support annual billing or advance payment for multiple months. Plus provides higher limits and features for the subscribing account; another user still needs a separate account under the account-sharing policy.

ChatGPT Business is a self-serve team workspace with centralized billing and administrative controls, and it requires at least two paid seats that can mix Standard and Premium access. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025.

OpenAI listed Standard seats at US$25 per user each month on monthly billing or US$20 per user each month when billed annually; Premium seats were US$125 monthly or US$100 per month billed annually. These figures describe self-serve Business billing and do not include local taxes or a verified checkout total for every country.

The annual Business figures are per-month equivalents under annual billing, not month-to-month prices. OpenAI says the prices may vary by country and currency, so the amount presented at checkout remains the relevant local figure.

Starting August 24, 2026, a Business subscription can contain no more than 200 paid Standard and Premium seats combined, while older workspaces retain their previous limit. OpenAI directs organizations needing more than 200 seats to consider ChatGPT Enterprise, but the reviewed page does not quantify the legacy limit.

Separate accounts are the route for households and teams

A household member who needs ChatGPT can create a separate account and use Free or buy Plus independently. OpenAI directs each additional user to register separately rather than use another person's credentials.

Business is designed for organizations that need a shared workspace, centralized billing and member administration. Each participant occupies a separate paid seat, so the workspace supports team access without turning one password into a communal credential.

Shared links distribute content without sharing the account

OpenAI says a shared link lets a recipient view selected ChatGPT content without access to the creator's account. Anyone with a link created from a personal account can view the shared content, while a link created in a managed workspace is limited to eligible members of that workspace.

The preview can contain conversation history, supported images, uploaded files, names and personal details entered in a chat. OpenAI tells account holders not to include health information, financial details, passwords, account numbers or other sensitive personal information in shared content.

A creator can manage or delete personal shared links from Data controls. Deletion stops future access through the URL but does not erase a conversation or task that a recipient already saved to a separate account.

Four steps after a shared login or security alert

End shared access. The account holder can change the password to a unique value and log out of all devices, following the method that applies to the account's sign-in provider. Reusing the old password on another service would leave a second route for compromise.

Add two-factor authentication. OpenAI includes this step in both its account-sharing and suspicious-activity guidance. It adds a separate check if a password is exposed again.

Replace the access method. Another person can create a separate account, a team can assign a Business seat, and selected content can move through a reviewed shared link. The choice depends on whether the need is independent use, managed work or read-only access to a conversation.

Document a continuing restriction. OpenAI asks for the alert screenshot, timestamps with a time zone, device and browser details, and any identifiers shown in the message when Support must investigate. An appeal addresses a disputed suspension, while securing the account addresses the underlying exposure.
